George Michael and Lindsay Anderson: Wham! Movie Producer Reveals 2026

The George Michael and Lindsay Anderson conflict is one of the most intriguing untold stories in pop music history. As the producer of the original Wham! documentary, I witnessed firsthand the creative clash that led to Anderson's dismissal and the suppression of his visionary film. Now, with the release of 'Wham! 10 Days in China,' the full story can finally be told.

The Historic Wham! China Tour

In April 1985, Wham! became the first Western pop band to perform in China, a landmark event that captured global attention. I hired the acclaimed director Lindsay Anderson to capture the journey on film. Anderson, known for his provocative work like 'If....' and 'O Lucky Man!', brought a unique cinematic eye to the project.

Our crew of 30 was assembled for this unprecedented adventure. The night before flying to Beijing, Anderson gave a stirring pep talk, comparing our mission to Henry V's St. Crispin's Day speech. He called George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley the 'Apostles of the New Materialism,' a phrase that hinted at the cultural commentary he intended to weave into the film.

The Conflict and Dismissal

Six months later, after screening his first cut, Anderson was abruptly fired. His 80-minute work-in-progress, 'If You Were There...', was rejected by George Michael and the estate. The film, which showed China on the verge of modernization, was deemed too political and slow. It was shelved and became an 'un-film,' rarely seen except for a centennial tribute.

The dismissal was a media storm in the mid-80s but quickly faded from memory. A lighter, one-hour version called 'Foreign Skies' was assembled by music video directors and shown at Wembley Stadium during 'Wham! The Final' in 1986. Anderson's reaction to this diluted version was a withering 'Quite!'

The New Documentary and Rediscovered Footage

Now, the George Michael estate has sanctioned a new film, 'Wham! 10 Days in China,' which draws from the vast archive of unseen footage Anderson and our team shot. This documentary aims to restore the original vision and provide a more authentic look at the historic tour.

As a producer, I can attest that Anderson's original cut was a work of art, not just a concert film. It captured the tension between Western pop culture and communist China, a theme that resonates even today. The new film honors that legacy while offering a fresh perspective for modern audiences.
