The Mercury Prize 2026 shortlist has been revealed, and it features a stunning mix of legendary icons and rising stars, with Paul McCartney earning his first-ever nomination for his deeply personal album The Boys of Dungeon Lane. This prestigious award, which honors the best album by a British or Irish artist, has a competitive lineup that includes Olivia Dean, Dave, Raye, and Florence + the Machine.
Paul McCartney's Historic Mercury Prize Nomination
At 84, Paul McCartney is no stranger to accolades, but this marks his first Mercury Prize nomination since the award's inception in 1992. His album The Boys of Dungeon Lane is a poignant reflection on his Liverpool childhood and his early friendships with his Beatles bandmates. In an interview, McCartney shared how he felt John Lennon's presence while writing the album: “My collaborator was probably one of the best writers of the century, so, yeah, you’re going to miss him. But when I write [about a specific place], I kind of know he would’ve known it.”
