Scottish police officer Alan Greer was a serial rapist who attacked at least nine women over 14 years, including a victim he raped after she called police for help. The case, now one of Police Scotland's biggest anti-corruption inquiries, has exposed how Greer used his position to prey on vulnerable victims. His offending came to light when a woman reported a 2012 rape, triggering an investigation that uncovered a pattern of violence and exploitation.
The Shocking Revelations of a Police Rapist
PC Alan Greer, who joined Strathclyde police in 2009, led a double life. While on duty he appeared unblemished, but off duty he attacked women, including five sex workers. A BBC Disclosure investigation revealed he used hundreds of sex workers throughout his career, and more victims are expected to come forward.

Comparison with the Wayne Couzens Case
A source close to the investigation called this Police Scotland's Wayne Couzens moment, referencing the Metropolitan Police officer who raped and murdered Sarah Everard. Both cases involved missed opportunities to stop a predator in uniform. The table below highlights key similarities:
| Aspect | Alan Greer (Police Scotland) | Wayne Couzens (Met Police) |
|---|---|---|
| Years of offending | Over 14 years (2009-2023) | Multiple attacks leading to murder (2021) |
| Victim profile | At least 9 women, including sex workers | Sarah Everard and others |
| Missed warnings | No prior disciplinary issues | Previous allegations dropped |
| Outcome | Died by suicide in May 2023 | Life imprisonment |
Key Takeaways from the Investigation
- Police abuse of power: Greer exploited victims encountered during his duties.
- Systemic failures: No red flags despite 17 years of service.
- Victim bravery: A single report in 2023 triggered the entire inquiry.
- Wider implications: Calls for reform in Police Scotland’s anti-corruption unit.
Assistant Chief Constable Lynn Ratcliff confirmed the evidence was 'truly shocking.' She stated the officer abused his power and revisited someone from his duties. The victim's courage to speak up was the trigger for the investigation.
Understanding the Timeline of Abuse
Greer’s first known victim was raped in her Glasgow home in 2012 after calling police. She reported the attack late last year, leading to the Anti-Corruption Unit identifying the call and officers involved. So far, eight additional victims have been identified, with more likely to emerge. Greer took his own life in May 2023 at age 47, leaving a wife and child who were unaware of his violent double life.
