The World Cup final between Argentina and Spain has sparked a surprising sentiment across Latin America: many fans are rooting for Spain. Brazilian journalist Julia Duailibi recently wrote about her reluctance to support neighboring Argentina, citing racist scenes by a minority of Argentinian fans and the silence of the majority. This shift reflects deeper rifts in regional football loyalties.
Why Latin Americans Are Turning Against Argentina
Historically, Latin American nations often united against European teams in global tournaments. However, that solidarity has eroded. Argentinian sociologist Nicolás Cabrera explains that Argentina's recent dominance—reaching three of the past four World Cup finals—has fueled resentment. Meanwhile, traditional rivals like Brazil, Uruguay, and Chile have exited earlier, intensifying regional envy.

Racism and Fan Behavior
Racist incidents involving Argentinian fans have been a flashpoint. Duailibi noted that these acts turned her stomach, a sentiment echoed by many Mexicans, Colombians, and Ecuadorians. The silence of the majority on the pitch has further alienated neighboring countries.
