According to the National Energy System Operator (Neso), solar farms and rooftop panels supplied 14.4% of the country's electricity in July, surpassing the previous monthly record of 12.4% set in May. This represents a 50% increase compared to July last year, when solar accounted for just 9.6% of generation.

The record was fueled by prolonged cloudless weather, with some regions experiencing nearly double the average sunshine hours for the month. The extra solar output also helped meet higher electricity demand from air-conditioning units during heatwaves.

Rooftop Solar Installations Surge

Official figures show that Great Britain recorded 142,536 new solar installations in the first half of the year, the highest six-month total since 2011. Household rooftop systems make up the majority of these additions, accounting for slightly less than a third of the country's total solar capacity.

More homeowners are turning to solar panels to generate their own low-cost electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and shielding themselves from volatile energy prices. Chris Hewett, CEO of Solar Energy UK, stated: "Fifteen years ago, solar energy was a footnote in the electricity mix. Now it is a major player, delivering homegrown, cheap, clean and reliable energy."
