The Woodside gas project, one of the world's largest gas developments in Western Australia, is facing a federal court challenge over its climate impact and threat to ancient rock art. The Australian Conservation Foundation and Friends of Australian Rock Art argue the approval violates Australia's environment law.
What Is the Woodside North West Shelf Gas Project?
Woodside's North West Shelf gas export project is a massive expansion that extends operations at the Karratha gas processing plant until 2070. The project has been labeled a "carbon bomb" due to its potential to release about 4 billion tonnes of CO2, equivalent to roughly 10 years of Australia's annual emissions.

Climate Concerns and Legal Challenge
The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) contends that Environment Minister Murray Watt failed to properly consider how emissions from the gas plant could cause substantial damage to protected environments. The case is a significant test of Australia's environment law in addressing the climate crisis.

Impact on Indigenous Rock Art
The gas plant operates adjacent to the Murujuga Indigenous rock art complex, which contains over a million petroglyphs dating back 50,000 years, including the oldest known image of a human face. Friends of Australian Rock Art (Fara) argue the project threatens this irreplaceable cultural heritage.
Key Takeaways
- The Woodside gas project is being challenged in federal court by environmental and rock art advocates.
- Emissions from the project could equal 10 years of Australia's annual CO2 output.
- A UN special rapporteur has intervened to advise on Australia's international climate obligations.
- The case tests how Australia's environment law handles climate-related damage.
FAQ
What is the Woodside gas project?
The Woodside North West Shelf gas project is a major gas export expansion in Western Australia, operating until 2070 and producing significant CO2 emissions.
Why is the project being challenged in court?
The ACF and Fara argue the environment minister failed to consider the project's climate impact and threat to ancient rock art, violating Australia's environment law.
What role does the UN play in this case?
A UN special rapporteur has been allowed to intervene to advise the court on Australia's international climate obligations.
The outcome of this federal court case could set a precedent for how Australia balances energy development with climate and cultural heritage protection. Conservationists hope the ruling will force stricter emission assessments for future projects.
