This DIY nightstand can be placed on the floor or mounted on the wall beside the bed, and it is made from scrap pieces or workshop leftovers that are well-planed and calibrated. Given the simplicity of the object, let's have fun with routing and joinery, just to practice…

For last-minute designers, scrap materials and essential forms are a must for creating furniture pieces, and woe betide anyone who masks their appearance with any finish: however, they rely on professional builders to turn ideas into reality, while we do everything ourselves. Since not much skill is required to build a DIY nightstand like this, let's complicate our lives a bit and, after recovering material from leftovers, do some training: calibrating the pieces, bench routing, recalibrating after joints, and final assembly of the sides, simply glued together: the only screws used are for fixing the hinges and the magnet that keeps the drop-down door closed. The final result is appreciated more for the rustic aesthetic of the DIY nightstand than for pure functionality; it is certainly not a spacious piece, but it suits an informal style centered on recycling.
Materials
The materials, after planing, consist of: 3 small boards 15x90x450 mm; 3+6 beams 60x45x450/350 mm; 4+4 strips 15x30x450/350 mm; 2 sheets of 5 mm plywood for the bottom and back; 2 strips 45x45x450 mm for base reinforcement; 2 book hinges, a magnet, and a burnished ring handle with a catch.

DIY Nightstand – Joinery Details
Time required: 1 day
Step 1: Apply a Groove in One of the Short Sides of the Beams
In one of the short sides of the beams, along the entire length, we make a groove 12 mm deep and 15 mm wide with a cylindrical router bit, at a constant distance from the edges; for this purpose, you need to clamp a guide strip at the appropriate distance from the router and do a test with a scrap piece to verify that the groove is perfectly parallel to the length. In the 4 central beams of each side, the groove will be used to insert the plywood panel.

Step 2: Assemble the Side Panels
Apply wood glue to the grooves and insert the plywood panels. Clamp the assembly and let it dry. Once dry, sand the surfaces smooth and calibrate the edges to ensure a perfect fit.

Step 3: Attach the Top and Bottom
Glue the top and bottom boards to the side panels. Use clamps to hold everything together while the glue sets. For added stability, you can reinforce the bottom with the 45x45x450 mm strips.
Enhance your bedroom with lighting that creates the perfect ambiance.
Step 4: Install the Drop-Down Door
Attach the drop-down door using book hinges. Install the magnet to keep the door closed and add the burnished ring handle with a catch for easy opening.
Complete your bedroom look with wall decor that reflects your personal style.
Step 5: Finish and Mount
Sand the entire piece and apply a finish of your choice (e.g., wax, oil, or varnish). The nightstand can be placed on the floor or mounted to the wall using appropriate brackets.
