When a stretched string vibrates, it produces a sound that can be amplified by a resonance box. This is the basic principle behind a DIY xylophone. Depending on the materials and shape of the resonance box, the sound takes on very different characteristics. The same principle applies if the vibrating elements are made of different materials—for example, pieces of bamboo cane.

This project brings all of that together in a double-sided musical instrument: each side produces completely different sounds with a delightful ethnic flavor. The construction uses reclaimed materials like two old drawers, wood scraps, threaded rods, mouse balls, brass clamps, and more. Whether you're a music lover or a DIY enthusiast, this guide will walk you through building your own xylophone step by step.
Building a DIY Xylophone
Time required: 1 day
- Remove the bottom of the drawer – Remove the bottom from one of the two drawers.
- Cut two panels – Cut two panels of spruce slats to the external dimensions of the drawers.
- Screw the panels to the drawers – Temporarily screw the panels to close one face of each drawer.
- Join the two drawers – Join the two drawers by fixing two 6 mm thick slats laterally, flush at the top and bottom.
- Special elements of the construction – Some special elements include: M6 threaded rod, balls recovered from old computer mice, and a hexagonal aluminum bar cut into equal pieces, all drilled axially and threaded internally with M6 diameter.
- Gild with spray paint – The threaded hexagonal bar pieces, along with two rod segments, are gilded with spray paint from a can.
- Drill the soundboard of the resonance box – Remove the top boards from both sides of the resonance box. On one board, drill a series of ten large-diameter holes using a drill bit, and a series of twelve 6 mm diameter holes. The first series is in the central area of the board, with holes aligned in 5 pairs of 2. In the second series, maintain the pattern.
Flipping the Instrument
Once the resonance box is assembled, flip the instrument to access both sides. Each side will produce distinct tones, creating a rich, layered sound. For the best results, ensure all threaded parts are tight and the bars are properly aligned.
Materials and Tools Needed
- Two old drawers (or similar wooden boxes)
- Spruce slats for panels
- 6 mm thick slats for joining
- M6 threaded rods
- Hexagonal aluminum bar (cut into equal pieces)
- Old computer mouse balls (or similar metal spheres)
- Brass clamps
- Spray paint (gold or desired color)
- Drill and drill bits (large and 6 mm)
- Screws and screwdriver
- Sandpaper
Tips for a Professional Finish
- Sand all wooden parts before assembly to avoid splinters.
- Use a level to ensure the resonance box is perfectly flat.
- Test the sound of each bar before final assembly—adjust the length or tension as needed.
- For a polished look, consider painting or staining the wood. Browse our home improvement collection for paints and finishing supplies.
FAQ
Can I use other materials for the bars?
Yes! While this guide uses hexagonal aluminum bars, you can experiment with different metals or even hardwoods. For a unique look, check out our wall decor collection for inspiration on finishes.
How do I tune my xylophone?
Tuning is done by adjusting the length of the bars. Shorter bars produce higher pitches, longer bars produce lower pitches. You can also sand the ends slightly to fine-tune the sound.
What if I don't have old drawers?
You can use any wooden box or even build a custom resonance box from scratch. For storage solutions, see our storage benches collection for ideas.
How do I attach the bars securely?
Use the threaded rods and brass clamps to hold the bars in place. Ensure they are tight but allow the bars to vibrate freely. Need extra hardware? Visit our home improvement collection.
Can I make a larger xylophone?
Absolutely! Scale up the design by using longer drawers and more bars. For larger projects, consider our desks and work surfaces collection for sturdy work tables.
