There are those who love music, those who love fishing, those who love reading, and those who love DIY. Our reader Giuseppe Gramola has a deep and absorbing passion for cabinetmaking and, in particular, for wood inlay. From the forge to the lathes, from the band saw to the planer, there isn’t a machine missing in his workshop that he doesn’t know how to use with the utmost skill for wood inlay.

Yet he doesn’t disdain the use of hand tools such as gouges and chisels (about fifty of them) or planes, self-built, for shaping, with the sole and blade designed to create toruses, scotias, ogees, and every other profile.
The Woods Best Suited for Inlay
For inlay, you need solid wood, preferably hardwood, from black locust to walnut, from ebony to rosewood, which he buys in planks four fingers thick. From these, with the large band saw, he can also obtain boards two or three millimeters thick, which he smooths and regularizes not with a plane but with a special thickness sander: the starting material for his inlays, generally inspired by classic French rococo boiserie. If you’re looking to upgrade your home improvement tools, you’ll find everything from saws to sanders at GrandGoldman.
Wood Inlay: The First Steps
Prepare the boards about two millimeters thick needed for the background and the inlay tiles (here oak, national and African walnut, maple, black locust, and rosewood) using the band saw and thickness sander. Regularize the edges with a plane guided on a strip to which the board is fixed with small nails. Pair the boards along the trimmed edges, gluing them onto a strip of paper; fold them back and spread the edges with a thin but complete thread of vinyl glue. Reopen the board, further secure the joint with other paper strips, and then put it in a press. Repeat the operations in the same order until you reach the planned width for the inlay. How to Inlay Wood
The design must be reproduced in as many copies as there are colors of wood used. The various parts of the design are cut out and glued onto the corresponding boards. Using a fine-toothed fret saw, cut out the pieces, keeping the saw blade perfectly perpendicular. The cut pieces are then assembled like a puzzle on a background board, which is also about two millimeters thick. This assembly is glued onto a thicker support panel, such as plywood or MDF, and pressed until the glue dries. For precision cutting, consider a quality band saw or fret saw from our home improvement collection.
Final Touches
Once the glue is dry, the surface is scraped and sanded flat. The inlay is then finished with a clear coat of varnish or wax to protect the wood and enhance the colors. You can also apply a light stain to even out the tones. For the perfect finishing touch, browse our wall decor to display your masterpiece.
Frequently Asked Questions About Wood Inlay
What tools do I need to start wood inlay?
You’ll need a band saw or fret saw, a thickness sander or plane, chisels, gouges, clamps, and a workbench. For a complete setup, explore our home improvement tools.
Which woods are best for beginners?
Start with softer hardwoods like walnut, cherry, or maple. Avoid very hard woods like ebony until you have more experience. Our home improvement collection includes starter kits and materials.
Can I do wood inlay without a workshop?
Yes, with a portable workbench and compact tools. A sturdy desk or work surface can double as your workspace.
How do I fix mistakes in an inlay?
Small gaps can be filled with wood filler mixed with sawdust. For larger errors, carefully remove the piece and recut a replacement. Keep a set of precision chisels on hand for corrections.
What finish should I use for an inlay project?
A clear polyurethane or lacquer works well. For a natural look, use wax or Danish oil. Check out our finishing supplies for recommendations.
