As every year, Time magazine has published its ranking of the , a list that selects 50 products of all kinds that, in their opinion, represent true innovations in their field.
The list includes robotic arms, a new baby bottle design, or an electronic bracelet that helps you quit smoking, but among the 50 inventions selected this year, we find two kitchen utensils that are as seemingly simple as they are ingenious. These are them.
The definitive universal lid

Lids for pots and pans are a nuisance: they stack poorly, they get mixed up, and there's no way one from one pot fits another. Universal lids already exist, but they aren't very useful. While they can prevent splatters, they don't seal pots properly, allowing them to lose heat (which means longer cooking times) or liquids to drip down the sides.
It has three lower lips of different sizes, which allow the lid to fit a wide variety of pots and pans
The kitchen solutions manufacturer , even before creating its first designs, asked hundreds of cooks what they needed to change in their kitchen. "Overwhelmingly, we heard complaints about lids and the mess they create," reads their website. "We spent a year developing a lid to solve this frustrating problem."
The invention, , is made of silicone and stainless steel, and has three lower lips of different sizes, which allow the lid to fit a wide variety of pots and pans without the problems of its predecessors.
Although, as Chip Malt, co-founder of Made In, explains to Time, the invention "seems very simple," it took a lot of work to arrive at a design that seems right. Consumers have proven them right, even though we're talking about a lid that costs around 43 euros, the first batch sold out entirely in just two days.
A food container that keeps vegetables fresher

The company Housewares has developed a technology that, installed in containers and food storage boxes, allows fresh produce to last much longer.
As fruits and vegetables ripen, they consume oxygen and release water and carbon dioxide. The invention contains a membrane that regulates the flow of these, in and out of the container, allowing fruits and vegetables to last several more days in perfect condition.
The technology is already available in Spain, in Sistema brand containers. The 1.5-liter container can be purchased on Amazon for 11.31 euros, the 1.9-liter one for 15.31 euros, the same price as the largest one, at 2.6 liters.
