The Liberal Party is facing internal debate over gender quotas after leader Angus Taylor hosed down a proposal, while senior shadow cabinet minister Anne Ruston urged action with urgency. The discussion paper, circulated by the Liberal Party Commission led by Queensland Senator James McGrath, explores options to refresh the ageing membership base and engage women, multicultural communities, and young people.
Angus Taylor’s Stance on Gender Quotas
Taylor stated on Thursday, “I’ve never supported any quotas at all, but what I do support is more great people joining the Liberal party and more great people, women and from all sorts of backgrounds.” However, his deputy Jane Hume left the door ajar, saying, “This is a draft report. It’s up for discussion right now, and we’ll consider all of the options that are put out there.”

Shadow Minister Calls for Urgent Action
Anne Ruston went further, telling Guardian Australia, “Every review is only as good as what gets implemented afterwards … we’re at a critical juncture so listening isn’t enough. We need to act on what we’re hearing, with urgency.” She noted that the status quo is not working, pointing to the low number of women in the House of Representatives.
