Greater gliders, Australia's largest gliding marsupials, are not as great at gliding as previously thought, according to new research that measured their aerial abilities for the first time. The study found these fluffy creatures soar an average of just 19 meters, far less than the 100 meters suggested in an 85-year-old study. Using infrared binoculars, lasers, and tape measures, researchers tracked 41 flights in New South Wales forests, recording launch and landing heights, horizontal distance, and glide angle.
Key Findings on Greater Glider Gliding
The lead author, Dr. Ana Gracanin, a conservation biologist at the Australian National University, emphasized that the term "greater" refers to their large body size, not gliding distance. The longest flight captured was under 50 meters. On average, gliders jump from about 22 meters above ground and land on another tree at about 5 meters. They use a membrane stretching from elbows to ankles to stay aloft, tucking their paws under their chin as they soar.

Comparison of Glide Distances
| Study | Reported Glide Distance | Actual Measured Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 1941 Study | 100 meters | Unconfirmed (likely yellow-bellied glider) |
| 2024 Study | Average 19 meters | Maximum 50 meters |
Taller trees may allow for longer glides, but the study questions whether 100-meter glides are achievable regularly. The 1941 report may have been a case of mistaken identity, likely referring to a yellow-bellied glider.
Why This Matters for Conservation
Greater gliders are endangered, and understanding their true gliding capabilities is critical for habitat conservation. Shorter glides mean they need denser, taller forests to move between trees safely. Dr. Gracanin described witnessing a glider in action: "It goes from being a hunched-over ball of fluff to suddenly spreading its limbs and flying like a magical flying carpet."
- Average glide distance: 19 meters
- Maximum recorded glide: 50 meters
- Launch height: ~22 meters
- Landing height: ~5 meters
- Key membrane: Elbow to ankle
FAQ
How far do greater gliders actually glide?
Recent research shows greater gliders glide an average of 19 meters, with a maximum of 50 meters, much shorter than the 100 meters previously believed.
Why are greater gliders called "greater"?
The term "greater" refers to their large body size, not their gliding distance. They are Australia's largest gliding marsupial.
What do greater gliders look like when gliding?
They spread their limbs, tuck their paws under their chin, and use a membrane from elbows to ankles to soar, resembling a magical flying carpet or a stingray-UFO hybrid.
