New mothers are rarely asked what they think amid the global panic over falling birthrates. Politicians offer incentives, yet the real struggles of motherhood remain invisible. A major report from Theos finally brings these experiences to light.
The Missing Voice in the Birthrate Debate
Every week brings another alarm about declining birthrates. Leaders from JD Vance to Jacob Rees-Mogg urge more babies, while countries like France send mailers to 29-year-olds. But the people actually giving birth—mothers—are conspicuously absent from these conversations.

What the Theos Report Reveals
The Theos report, which I had the privilege of forewording, covers everything from mortality and tax to sleep and debt. It makes the experience of becoming a mother visible. It shows that maternal mental health issues, maternity discrimination, and financial strain are overshadowed by panic about national birthrates.
| Issue | Report Finding |
|---|---|
| Maternity Discrimination | Over 50% of new mothers report workplace bias |
| Mental Health | 1 in 5 mothers experience postnatal depression |
| Financial Burden | Average debt increases by $10,000 after child’s first year |
Why Mothers Are Overlooked
Maternal well-being is rarely part of the birthrate conversation. Instead, theorists blame housing costs, education, or smartphones. The real issue is how society organizes support for caregivers. New mothers face isolation, lack of affordable childcare, and inadequate parental leave.
Key Takeaways on Supporting New Mothers
- Prioritize maternal mental health services
- Enforce anti-discrimination laws for pregnant workers
- Expand paid parental leave to at least 12 months
- Invest in affordable, high-quality childcare
- Include mothers' voices in policy-making
Potential Solutions from Global Examples
Countries like Sweden offer generous parental leave and see higher birth satisfaction. In contrast, Russia uses medals, and Italy gives a €1,000 bonus—but these miss the mark. Mothers need systemic support, not token incentives.
FAQ
Why are new mothers ignored in birthrate debates?
Because the focus is on economic and demographic outcomes, not on the experiences of those raising children. The Theos report aims to change this.
What can governments do to support new mothers?
Implement paid parental leave, affordable childcare, and workplace protections. Listen to mothers when designing family policies.
Does the birthrate decline really matter?
It matters if we ignore the human cost. Supporting mothers leads to healthier families and stable societies.
The panic about falling birthrates will continue, but without including new mothers, we will never find real solutions. Read the full Theos report to understand what needs to change.
