Andy Burnham has declared himself ready to lead the UK as prime minister, with cabinet picks set to be announced on Monday after a swift transition from Keir Starmer. The former mayor of Greater Manchester secured overwhelming support from MPs, trade unions, and party branches, making him the sole candidate to take over the Labour leadership.
Burnham's Path to Power
At a special party conference at TUC headquarters in London on Friday, Burnham was officially declared leader by Shabana Mahmood, the frontrunner to be his chancellor. Addressing senior Labour politicians and supporters, Burnham said the country was "crying out for a new politics" but warned it was Labour's "last chance to change." He emphasized the need for a united movement to "beat Britain's new right."
