Andy Burnham has appointed three new ministerial aides from Labour’s most leftwing faction, the Socialist Campaign Group, marking the first time members of that group have been part of the government. This move signals a deliberate effort to heal factional divides within the Labour Party and broaden the frontbench’s ideological composition.
Who Are the New Appointees?
The three new parliamentary private secretaries (PPSs) hailing from the Socialist Campaign Group are Olivia Blake (Sheffield Hallam) for local government, Mary Kelly Foy (City of Durham) for housing, and Steve Witherden (Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr) for energy. The PPS role is the most junior ministerial position, often serving as a training ground for promising MPs who manage liaison between the government and backbenchers.

Burnham's Strategy for Unity
Burnham has stated he wants to end Labour factionalism that divided the party under both Jeremy Corbyn and Keir Starmer. By appointing from both the left and centrist wings, he aims to build a "broad church" frontbench. The new chief whip, Anneliese Midgley, has also promised to beef up the role of PPSs, allowing them to do more media appearances and contribute directly to policy direction.
Key Takeaways
- The Socialist Campaign Group now has official government representation for the first time.
- PPS roles are being expanded in scope and influence.
- Burnham seeks to balance left and centrist appointments to reduce internal tension.
- The appointments were made in consultation with cabinet ministers.
Implications for UK Politics
This integration of leftwing voices could reshape Labour's policy agenda, especially on housing, local government, and energy. Observers note that Burnham is emulating Tony Blair’s strategy of keeping the left engaged through junior roles, as exemplified by Dennis Skinner rallying the troops during Blair’s most difficult days. The move may also influence upcoming byelections and party dynamics.
