Ecosystem Collapse Report Sparks UK Security Alarm 2026

The ecosystem collapse report has ignited a political firestorm in the UK, with Green party leader Zack Polanski demanding the government release the full unredacted intelligence assessment linking environmental degradation to national security threats.

Speaking at the Wild Summit event in Bristol, Polanski will challenge Prime Minister Andy Burnham's administration to publish the complete findings from the joint intelligence chiefs, which warn of catastrophic consequences for the UK if overseas ecosystems continue to deteriorate. The demand comes after The Guardian revealed the report's existence last year, painting a dire picture of food shortages, price spikes, mass migration, and potential conflict.

Why the Ecosystem Collapse Report Matters for UK Security

The intelligence assessment, compiled by the UK's spy chiefs, concludes that the collapse of ecosystems abroad will have direct and devastating impacts on UK national security. The redacted 14-page version released in January only scratches the surface, omitting critical details about the severity and timing of these threats. Polanski argues that the public deserves to know the full extent of the risk.

Key findings from the redacted summary include:

• Severe food shortages could trigger global price volatility, affecting UK consumers
• Climate-induced migration waves may strain borders and international relations
• Political destabilization in vulnerable regions could disrupt supply chains
• Over-exploitation of natural resources exacerbates the crisis

Government Refusal to Publish Full Report

Despite repeated freedom of information requests and calls from MPs, the government has consistently refused to release the unredacted report. This secrecy has fueled suspicions that the full findings are more alarming than the public has been led to believe. Polanski's challenge directly confronts the prime minister, asking: "Will you tell the truth – and release the full unredacted report from the joint intelligence chiefs? Or will you keep hiding the truth from the public?"

Political and Public Reaction

The Green party leader, expected to run in the upcoming byelection in Holborn and St Pancras, is leveraging this issue to highlight the government's inadequate response to the climate crisis. Environmental groups and opposition MPs have echoed Polanski's call, arguing that transparency is essential for informed public debate and effective policy-making.

Experts note that the report's findings align with scientific consensus on biodiversity loss and climate change, but the intelligence lens adds a new dimension of urgency. "This is not just an environmental issue; it's a security issue," said one analyst. "The government's refusal to publish could undermine public trust and delay necessary action."

What Full Disclosure Could Mean

If the full report were released, it could reshape the UK's approach to international environmental policy and national security strategy. Polanski and his supporters argue that only with complete information can the government implement robust measures to mitigate risks and protect citizens. The demand also serves as a test of the new prime minister's commitment to transparency and climate leadership.
