El Mayo, the notorious Mexican drug lord and co-founder of the Sinaloa cartel, was sentenced to life in prison in a US federal court on Monday. The 76-year-old kingpin, Ismael Zambada García, admitted to trafficking vast amounts of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and fentanyl as part of a plea deal last August.
The Rise and Fall of El Mayo
Zambada helped build the Sinaloa cartel into one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world. For decades, he evaded capture while orchestrating shipments that flooded the United States with illegal narcotics. His sentencing in Brooklyn federal court marks one of the highest-profile convictions since Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán received a life sentence in 2019.

Plea Deal and Financial Penalties
As part of the plea agreement, the US Justice Department agreed not to seek the death penalty. In addition to life imprisonment, the court ordered Zambada to forfeit $15 billion in drug trade profits. This historic forfeiture aims to dismantle the financial infrastructure of the Sinaloa cartel.
| Defendant | Sentence | Forfeiture | Plea Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada | Life in prison | $15 billion | August 2024 |
| Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán | Life in prison | $12.6 billion | February 2019 |
Impact on US-Mexico Drug War
Prosecutors accused Zambada of leading a violent organization that corrupted Mexican politicians, military officials, and law enforcement. His sentencing sends a strong message that high-level cartel leaders will face justice in US courts. However, the Sinaloa cartel continues to operate, and experts warn that violence in Mexico may persist.

Courtroom Statement and Legacy
Before sentencing, Zambada read a public letter taking responsibility for his crimes. “I did not go to trial because I did not want to deny the truth,” he said. He also called for an end to the violence that has plagued Mexico for decades, urging the next generation of traffickers to stop.
Despite his words, the damage is immense. The Sinaloa cartel has been linked to thousands of deaths and widespread addiction in the US. El Mayo’s life sentence marks the end of an era, but the fight against drug trafficking continues.
