Extreme heatwaves in Europe are not changing Brits’ holiday plans, according to travel bosses who gathered at the Abta convention in Madeira. Despite record temperatures, wildfires, and soaring fuel costs, British travelers remain determined to book their summer getaways, even as the industry warns of ever-less affordable holidays and a shrinking map of welcoming destinations.

Travel Executives Remain Optimistic Despite Challenges

After a year marked by extreme heat and war sending fuel prices skywards, British travel executives had hoped for solace in Madeira’s benign subtropical climate, separated by hundreds of miles of blue sea from the overtourism protests and six-hour EU-entry queues seen on the Portuguese mainland. As bosses admitted, holidays will be ever less affordable, AI is coming for their jobs, and the visitable world is shrinking – not least those parts where tourists remain welcome.

Some of the bigger anxieties in spring, such as widespread border chaos and planes running out of fuel, have not come to pass; others now appear chronic issues. New supplies of jet fuel, a major concern after the US first attacked Iran in February, have been established – but the cost is staying far higher for longer than most expected.

Rising Fuel Costs and Shrinking Capacity

“Fuel is a huge part of any holiday and people are going to have to reckon with the cost,” said Neil Swanson, Tui UK & Ireland managing director, among the attendees at the Abta convention. Tui and airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair escaped the worst immediate impact by having secured much of their 2026 fuel supply at a fixed price. But the latter airlines are now slashing capacity for winter.

“It’s not great for consumers, who are going to have to pay a lot more for their holidays. But airlines are going to be less and less hedged and prices are going to go up,” Swanson added. This combination of higher fuel costs and reduced capacity is set to drive up ticket prices, making holidays less accessible for many British families.

How Extreme Heatwaves Influence Destination Choices

While extreme heatwaves in Europe have made some traditional hotspots less appealing, they have not yet caused a significant shift in booking patterns. Instead, travelers are adapting by choosing cooler destinations or traveling outside peak summer months. However, the overall demand remains robust, signaling that the British love for holidays abroad is resilient.

Factor Impact on British Holiday Plans
Extreme heatwaves Minimal change; some shift to cooler destinations
Rising fuel costs Higher holiday prices, reduced affordability
AI in travel industry Job displacements, operational efficiencies
Shrinking welcome Fewer destinations, overtourism protests

Key Takeaways for Travelers

  • Book early: Securing holidays sooner can lock in lower prices before fuel surcharges hit.
  • Consider off-peak travel: Avoid extreme heat and peak costs by traveling in shoulder seasons.
  • Stay flexible: With capacity cuts, flight availability may be limited; flexibility helps.
  • Budget more: Expect to pay more for flights and packages as fuel costs remain high.
