Flight attendants around the world witness the secret lives of flight attendants firsthand, often dealing with intoxicated passengers. Recent incidents highlight how British passengers frequently drink excessively, leading to air rage and safety concerns. Understanding these dynamics helps travelers stay informed and respectful.
Rising Air Rage Incidents Post-Covid
The term air rage emerged in the 1990s, but incidents skyrocketed after the pandemic. In 2021, the US reported more air rage cases than in the previous three decades combined. Mask non-compliance added a new layer of conflict, with flight attendants bearing the brunt of passenger frustration.

In the UK, prosecution numbers don't capture the full scope, as jurisdictional gaps often let offenders escape charges. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) warns that behavior illegal in the airline's country may not be illegal at the destination, leaving victims without justice.
Drunk British Passengers: A Persistent Problem
Thomas, a 27-year-old flight attendant, notes: "British passengers always drink like they’ve never drunk before." A recent case involved a 30-year-old holidaymaker trying to kiss a male crew member, only to be arrested on his return. Jet2 banned two passengers for life after a mid-air brawl, and BA canceled a Barbados flight when crew were too drunk from the hotel bar.
Impact on Cabin Crew Safety
Unite, the union representing cabin crew, reports that 34% of female members have been sexually assaulted at work. Additionally, 67% experienced unwanted flirting, 65% received sexually offensive jokes, and 55% faced persistent harassment. These numbers underscore the need for stricter measures.
| Incident Type | Percentage of Female Crew Affected |
|---|---|
| Sexual Assault | 34% |
| Unwanted Flirting or Remarks | 67% |
| Sexually Offensive Jokes | 65% |
| Harassment | 55% |
Key Takeaways for Travelers
