How Did Your MP Vote on the Assisted Dying Bill Reintroduction 2026

How did your MP vote on the reintroduced assisted dying bill? This critical question follows the recent parliamentary vote that has reignited debate across the UK. The bill, which seeks to legalize assisted dying for terminally ill adults, was reintroduced after a previous attempt failed. Understanding how your representative voted is essential for holding them accountable and engaging in this vital conversation.

Background of the Assisted Dying Bill

The assisted dying bill, formally known as the Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill, was reintroduced in Parliament after a similar bill did not pass in the previous session. The proposed legislation would allow adults with a terminal illness and less than six months to live to request medical assistance to end their life, subject to strict safeguards. Supporters argue it provides dignity and choice, while opponents raise concerns about coercion and the sanctity of life.

How the Vote Unfolded

The vote took place in the House of Commons after a lengthy debate. MPs were given a free vote, meaning they could vote according to their conscience rather than along party lines. The bill passed its second reading with a majority, but not without significant opposition. The breakdown of the vote reveals deep divisions within and across parties.

These numbers illustrate that while there is majority support, a significant minority remains opposed. The bill now moves to the committee stage, where it will be scrutinized line by line.

Key Takeaways from the Vote

• Cross-party support: MPs from all major parties voted in favor, showing this is not a partisan issue.
• Conscience vote: The free vote allowed MPs to follow their personal beliefs, leading to varied outcomes.
• Next steps: The bill will undergo further debate and potential amendments before becoming law.
• Public opinion: Polls suggest a majority of the public supports assisted dying, adding pressure on MPs.

Implications for the Future

The reintroduction of the assisted dying bill and the subsequent vote signal a shifting landscape in end-of-life legislation. If passed, the UK would join a growing list of countries that permit assisted dying. However, the bill still faces hurdles, including potential amendments in the House of Lords and further votes. The debate is far from over, and your MP's vote will be remembered.
