ICE arrested Chinese human rights lawyer Wu Shaoping in Pennsylvania, sparking fears of deportation to China where he faces persecution. Wu fled China in 2019 amid a crackdown on legal activists and sought asylum in the US in 2020. While awaiting a decision on his asylum claim, he worked as an Amazon courier in Mount Holly Springs, Cumberland County.
Details of the Arrest
On Wednesday, ICE officers stopped Wu while he was delivering parcels. According to his friend Shi Minglei, who spoke to him in detention, ICE asked for proof of citizenship. Wu presented his pending asylum application and explained his legal entry into the US. Despite this, agents arrested him and transferred him to a detention facility in Pennsylvania. The Department of Homeland Security has not commented.

Why This Case Matters
Wu represents a growing number of Chinese dissidents facing legal jeopardy in the US. His case highlights the risks asylum seekers face even after entering legally. Human rights groups worry that deportation could lead to torture or imprisonment in China. Wu previously took on sensitive cases involving religious minorities and political dissidents, often resulting in harassment or disbarment for lawyers.
