MLS New Commissioner Priorities: Broadcast, Roster, and Growth 2026

The MLS new commissioner priorities are set to reshape North American soccer as Larry Berg prepares to take the helm in 2026. With a focus on broadcast deals, roster regulations, and league expansion, Berg faces a critical juncture for Major League Soccer.

Broadcast Future and Apple Deal

The current partnership with Apple, which began in 2023, has brought a significant revenue stream of $250 million annually. However, viewership data remains opaque, and the league must decide whether to renew or pivot after the 2028-29 season.

Berg will need to evaluate the effectiveness of streaming-only distribution and explore hybrid models that include traditional TV to maximize reach and engagement.

Roster Rules and Competitive Balance

Roster rules have long been a point of contention among fans and clubs. The new commissioner must address designated player slots, salary caps, and youth development pathways to ensure competitive balance while attracting top talent.

Potential reforms could include more flexible spending mechanisms and increased investment in academy systems to develop homegrown stars.

Expansion and Fan Experience

With recent additions like San Diego FC, expansion continues to grow the league's footprint. However, managing expansion fees and ensuring new markets thrive will be a key priority.

Enhancing the in-stadium experience and digital engagement will also be crucial to retaining and growing a younger fan base.
