Nicaragua's congress has announced a work plan to suspend elections, marking a significant escalation in the authoritarian regime of Daniel Ortega. The move, which eliminates the last vestige of democratic process, has drawn sharp condemnation from the United Nations and the United States. The Ortega-controlled National Assembly issued a statement citing 'peace, security, stability' as justification for ending elections, effectively cementing one-party rule.
What Led to the Suspension of Elections in Nicaragua?
President Daniel Ortega, who has been in power since 2007, ordered congress to pass laws that would 'build a wall' against the opposition. This came during the 47th anniversary of the Sandinista revolution. The regime has already imprisoned thousands, forced nearly 1 million Nicaraguans into exile, and violently suppressed protests. The suspension of elections is the logical endpoint of a years-long erosion of democracy.

International Reaction to Nicaragua's Election Suspension
The UN high commissioner for human rights, Volker Türk, called on Nicaragua to 'reopen civic space and restore the rule of law.' The US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, labeled the government a 'Murillo-Ortega dictatorship' and urged the international community to unite against the move. The United States insists that the Nicaraguan people have the right to choose their own leaders through democratic elections.
