The RAF Chinook crash of 1994, which killed 29 military personnel, has resurfaced as families urge Andy Burnham to order an independent review into the disaster. The crash occurred on the Mull of Kintyre, and for years the two pilots were blamed until an inquiry exonerated them in 2011 without determining the cause. Now, new evidence suggests a deliberate cover-up by the Ministry of Defence.
Why Families Demand a Fresh Review
Former Defence Secretary Liam Fox, who ordered the 2011 review, recently stated there are “deep concerns” that vital information was withheld. Fox supports the call for a new independent review, noting a “strong enough belief” that a cover-up took place. The Chinook Justice Campaign, representing over 55 family members, has delivered a letter to Andy Burnham, asking him to act within his first 100 days in office.

Matt Tobias, whose father Lt Col John Tobias died in the crash, emphasised that families do not want years of litigation. Instead, they seek a transparent review independent of the MoD. Burnham's past comments about ending Britain's “cover-up culture” gave them hope.
Legal Barriers and the European Court Route
A High Court judge recently ruled that families could not bring a legal claim against the MoD because it was brought too late. The CJC now plans to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights, but families prefer a quicker political solution.

What Is the Chinook Justice Campaign?
