Donald Trump acknowledged that the Boeing jet given to him by Qatar lacks defensive systems comparable to Air Force One, raising questions about presidential travel security. The admission came as Trump returned to Washington after attending the World Cup final in New Jersey, where he handed the trophy to Spain alongside FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Speaking to reporters, Trump explained that upgrades are planned within about a month to “max out” the aircraft’s protections.
Qatari Jet vs. Air Force One: Key Differences
The Boeing 747-8, donated by Qatar’s royal family and valued at nearly $400 million, is roughly 14 years old and lacks critical defensive features found on the purpose-built VC-25A aircraft. According to a New York Times report, the jet is missing infrared countermeasures to divert heat-seeking missiles and sensors to detect incoming launches. Unlike the current Air Force One fleet, it was not hardened against electromagnetic pulses or equipped with secure communications for crisis management.
