The Trump public health cuts have severely hindered the response to the record US cyclosporiasis outbreak, with Michigan reporting over 5,000 cases in a single week. Health officials warn this is likely the largest outbreak in US history, as state and local departments face layoffs and hiring freezes.
How public health cuts impact outbreak response
In March 2025, the Trump administration cut $12 billion in public health funding, including critical resources for laboratory capacity, disease monitoring, and outbreak investigation. This has left agencies like the CDC hemorrhaging staff and expertise, while millions lose health insurance through Medicaid and ACA coverage.

Michigan's escalating crisis
Michigan detected the first cyclosporiasis cases in late June and acted swiftly, but the parasite can take weeks to appear. The state now reports 102 hospitalizations and a 1,300-case increase in just two days. In a typical year, Michigan sees only 40 to 50 cases.
| Metric | Current Outbreak | Typical Year |
|---|---|---|
| Total cases (Michigan) | 5,000+ | 40-50 |
| Hospitalizations | 102 | Minimal |
| Federal funding cut | $12 billion | N/A |
Key takeaways from the outbreak
- Record outbreak size: Michigan's cases alone make this the largest US cyclosporiasis outbreak.
- Funding cuts worsen response: $12 billion in cuts hinder lab capacity and disease monitoring.
- Federal and state layoffs: CDC and local health departments face severe staffing shortages.
- Insurance losses: Millions losing coverage complicate tracking the parasite's spread.
