Volodomyr Zelenskyy’s abrupt dismissal of Ukraine’s youthful and innovative defense minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, has exposed troubling flaws in the president’s leadership, even as Kyiv gains advantages in its war with Russia. The move startled senior European officials and sparked demonstrations in Ukraine, highlighting deep tensions within the government.
Why Fedorov’s firing shocked Ukraine and Europe
Fedorov, aged 35, was appointed in January and quickly became known for leveraging technological advances in drone and missile technology. He streamlined military procurement, challenged corruption, and introduced competitive tendering. His data-driven approach aimed to solve persistent recruitment and training crises in Ukraine’s armed forces.

European officials viewed Fedorov as a key driver of Ukraine’s highly effective drone programme, which began during his time as minister of digital transformation. His casual style and freewheeling speeches grated with senior officers, but his results were undeniable.

Comparison of military reforms under Fedorov vs. previous leadership
| Aspect | Fedorov’s Approach | Previous Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Procurement | Competitive tendering, transparent | Prone to corruption, opaque |
| Technology | Drone and missile focus, data-driven | Slow adoption, traditional methods |
| Recruitment | Data-driven solutions, training reforms | Persistent crises, outdated systems |
| Leadership style | Casual, innovative, freewheeling | Bureaucratic, hierarchical |
Fedorov’s dismissal comes at a critical time. Ukraine is gaining advantages in drone warfare and missile strikes, but internal leadership struggles threaten momentum. The president’s decision has raised questions about Zelenskyy’s leadership and his ability to retain top talent.
Impact on Ukraine’s war strategy
Fedorov was credited with persuading Elon Musk to disable unauthorized Russian Starlink access, giving Ukrainian troops a significant battlefield advantage. His departure could slow the pace of military modernization and reform, especially in drone and missile technology.
Senior officers criticized Fedorov’s casual style, but his data-driven approach delivered results. The killing-for-points scheme, though controversial, rewarded effective army units. Now, Ukraine must find a replacement who can balance innovation with military hierarchy.
