Ukraine's dismissed defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for a wartime presidential election, challenging President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's authority amid the ongoing conflict with Russia. In a nine-minute video address, Fedorov argued that democracy cannot be held hostage by Russia and that Ukraine must restore full democratic processes even during prolonged war.
The Political Challenge to Zelenskyy
Fedorov, who was abruptly sacked as defence minister in July, did not mention Zelenskyy by name but implied the current administration struggles with corruption and lacks transparency. He stated, "People cannot endlessly live in a state where they do not understand why certain decisions are made." This marks the most direct political challenge to Zelenskyy since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

Elections Under Martial Law
Ukraine has suspended elections since martial law was imposed at the start of the invasion. Zelenskyy's five-year term ended in May 2024, but there has been little public demand for a vote while the war continues. However, Fedorov insists that Ukraine can fight and hold a national poll simultaneously, arguing that personal loyalty should not be the main criterion for appointments.
International Pressure and Support
Former US President Donald Trump previously demanded Ukraine hold an election, though his relationship with Zelenskyy has improved as Kyiv has shown resilience on the battlefield. Fedorov's call may resonate with international observers who view democratic continuity as essential for Ukraine's European aspirations.
Comparing Arguments For and Against Wartime Elections
| Arguments For | Arguments Against |
|---|---|
| Reinforces democratic legitimacy | Logistical challenges during conflict |
| Prevents authoritarian drift | Security risks for voters and candidates |
| Shows resilience against Russia | Diverts resources from war effort |
| Aligns with international norms | Potential for destabilization |
Key Takeaways
- Fedorov's call is a direct challenge to Zelenskyy's leadership.
- Elections remain suspended under martial law.
- International pressure, especially from the US, has influenced the debate.

Implications for Ukraine's Future
The proposal could spark a broader political debate within Ukraine. While some see elections as a sign of strength, others fear they could undermine unity. Fedorov's stance may appeal to those who believe that democratic processes must continue even in crisis.
