University Pays $250,000 to Professor Over Gaza Speech 2026

An Israeli professor's outspoken criticism of Gaza led to a $250,000 settlement from the University of Minnesota, highlighting the growing tension between academic freedom and donor influence. This case underscores the risks scholars face when speaking on controversial topics, and the financial consequences for institutions.

The Controversial Job Offer and Withdrawal

In June 2024, the University of Minnesota (UMN) offered historian Raz Segal a position to lead its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. The offer came after a rigorous search process, with committee members praising Segal as "breathtaking." However, just five days later, the university rescinded the offer, citing "perspective" from community members.

The reversal followed backlash over Segal's October 2023 op-ed in Jewish Currents, where he called Israel's actions in Gaza "a textbook case of genocide." Critics accused him of justifying Hamas crimes, though Segal rejected this and the article does not support such claims.

The $250,000 Settlement and Its Implications

Last week, Segal reached a $250,000 settlement with UMN. The terms note no admission of wrongdoing, but Segal believes the sum encourages other scholars who face punishment for criticizing Israel to "fight back." The settlement came after Segal obtained emails through public records requests, revealing a pressure campaign by donors, legislators, and pro-Israel activists.

One donor wrote to the university board: "We cannot allow someone like Raz Segal a blatant anti Zionist to head the department of Holocaust studies [sic]. There are many who will pull there [sic] pledges to the university." This pressure led UMN to shift from defending Segal to walking back the offer.

Impact on Academic Freedom

This case raises critical questions about academic freedom and the influence of money in higher education. Scholars worldwide have faced firings, suspensions, and investigations for speaking on Israel-Palestine issues. The settlement sends a message that institutions may face legal and financial consequences for bowing to donor pressure.

According to a 2024 survey by the American Association of University Professors, 37% of academics reported self-censoring on controversial topics due to fear of backlash. This incident may further chill open discourse on campuses.
