According to the report, public libraries can only serve as foundational democratic institutions if they can speak to everyone without partisan pressure. However, ongoing political and public pressures are challenging these principles, pushing libraries nationwide to a breaking point.
Key Findings and Examples
The report cites specific cases, such as conservative activist Riley Gaines being involved in library protests. It also notes the disproportionate targeting of books on gender identity and sexuality, with many bans focusing on these topics.
| Issue | Impact | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Book bans | Restrict access to diverse ideas | Gender identity books removed |
| Librarian harassment | Creates hostile work environment | Verbal and physical attacks |
| Funding cuts | Reduce services and hours | Budget reductions in several states |
Why Libraries Matter
Public libraries are essential for community access to information, education, and free expression. They provide resources for all, regardless of background. Censorship undermines this mission and can lead to a less informed public.
