Football fans often surprise the world by rooting for underdog teams at the World Cup, even when they have no family ties to that country. This phenomenon reveals deep emotional connections to style, players, or sheer passion. From a Sheffield man cheering for France to an Indian fan supporting Portugal, these stories show that fandom transcends borders.
Why Fans Choose Underdog Teams
Many football fans feel drawn to teams that play with grit and determination. The underdog narrative—a smaller nation defying odds—creates a powerful bond. For example, Paul from Sheffield started supporting France in 1982 because their football was “exciting and beautiful to watch.” He never switched allegiance, even when coworkers mocked his France flag.

The Role of Star Players
Star players often convert fans. Porus Patwari Jain from Rajasthan began following Manchester United because of Cristiano Ronaldo. That led him to support Portugal in World Cups. “That team had so much passion and grit,” he says. Such connections show how individual talent can inspire lifelong fandom.
