The president praised Syrskyi for defending Kyiv and launching the 2024 counter-invasion of Russia's Kursk province—the first foreign tanks on Russian soil since World War II. However, recent protests demanding Syrskyi's removal forced the decision.
Protests and Political Crisis
Thousands demonstrated in Kyiv and other cities after Fedorov's dismissal as defense minister, marking one of the biggest political crises since Russia's 2022 invasion. Protesters gave a Friday deadline for Fedorov's reinstatement, threatening indefinite protests if ignored.
Fedorov welcomed Drapatyi's appointment, calling it "a breath of fresh air and new hope" and emphasizing the need for a clear vision to end the war. He stressed automation of the frontline, asymmetric strikes, and saving soldiers' lives.
