The record Europe heatwave has unleashed severe thunderstorms across France, Germany, and Poland, bringing golf-ball-sized hail and dangerous flooding. As temperatures soared, the atmosphere became unstable, leading to violent storms that damaged vehicles, buildings, and vineyards.
Thunderstorms Strike Amid Record Heatwave
In southern France, residents reported hailstones measuring 5 to 7 centimeters in diameter, covering streets near Aubenas and Vals-les-Bains. The hail shattered windscreens and damaged roofs, while torrential rain caused localized flooding. In Poland, the city of Wrocław saw roads and tram tracks closed due to flooding and fallen trees on power lines.

FAQ
Why do thunderstorms occur during a heatwave?
Heatwaves heat the ground, causing warm air to rise rapidly. This creates instability in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of thunderstorms, often with heavy rain, hail, and strong winds.
How can I protect my car from hail damage?
Park in a garage or under a covered area. If caught outside, use a hail blanket or thick moving blankets to cover the car. Avoid parking under trees that may drop branches.
What should I do during a severe thunderstorm warning?
Stay indoors, away from windows. Unplug electronics to prevent surge damage. Avoid using plumbing and stay off corded phones. If driving, pull over safely and stay in the vehicle.
