Intercity Rail Summer Disruption: Slashed Services and Strike Vot 2026

Intercity rail passengers across Great Britain face significant disruption this summer, with slashed services on the Midland mainline and strike votes on two major north-south routes. East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced hundreds of cancellations due to ongoing problems with its Hitachi train fleet, while train drivers at LNER and Avanti West Coast are voting on strike action over pay disputes.

Why Intercity Rail Services Are Being Slashed

EMR is cancelling about 20 fast trains daily between London, Sheffield, and Nottingham, with many others running short-formed and likely overcrowded. The operator’s new class 810 fleet, previously branded Auroras, has suffered from what EMR calls “performance and reliability issues.” These bi-mode trains, which run on diesel and electricity, were introduced after a three-year delay but have failed to meet expectations.

Will Rogers, managing director of EMR, stated: “The performance of the class 810 fleet has fallen below the levels we and our customers expect, and it is necessary to introduce a temporary reduced timetable while we work with the manufacturer, Hitachi Rail, to improve consistency in service.” Hitachi Rail said it continues to “work closely with all industry partners implementing improvements.”

Strike Votes Threaten Summer Travel

The train drivers’ union Aslef has called a strike ballot on LNER, which runs services between London and Scotland, after a pay deal collapsed. Drivers are already voting on strike action at Avanti West Coast. If strikes proceed, passengers on these key intercity routes could face further cancellations and delays.

Impact on Passengers

With reduced timetables and potential strikes, travellers should expect crowded trains, longer journey times, and last-minute cancellations. EMR has apologised for the disruption and is working to restore reliable service, but no quick fix is in sight. The combination of slashed services and strike votes means summer 2025 could be particularly challenging for intercity rail passengers.
