Mercedes' Antonelli Stuns Verstappen for F1 Belgian GP Pole 2026

Kimi Antonelli produced a dominant lap to secure pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix, outpacing Red Bull's Max Verstappen by a stunning 0.317 seconds at Spa-Francorchamps. The Italian teenager's composure under pressure was remarkable, especially given his recent string of bad luck with mechanical failures.

How Antonelli Dominated Qualifying

The 19-year-old Mercedes driver flew around the Ardennes circuit with ease, showing no signs of the frustration from his battery failure in Spain and wheel-shield issue at Silverstone. His margin of victory was the largest any driver has achieved for pole this season, underscoring his growing confidence.

Verstappen's Tow Advantage Falls Short

Max Verstappen benefited from a tow from teammate Isack Hadjar, who willingly sacrificed his laps due to a 30-place grid penalty. Even with that aid, Verstappen could not match Antonelli's pace. “I’ve been feeling good with the car all year,” Antonelli said. “It’s good to be more and more confident whenever I jump in it.”

Russell's Struggles Continue

George Russell could only manage fourth place, a full half-second behind his teammate. The Briton has been battling a lack of straight-line speed since the Austrian GP, leaving him frustrated. “It’s frustrating, we thought we found the problem,” he said. “It feels like you’re battling with one hand behind your back.”

Title Race Heats Up

Antonelli's lead over Russell has been cut from 64 points after Monaco to 25 points going into this weekend. However, with this dominant pole performance, the Italian is poised to extend his advantage in Sunday's race. The Belgian GP promises to be a pivotal moment in the championship battle.

Key Takeaways from Belgian GP Qualifying

• Antonelli's pole margin (0.317s) is the largest of the season, showcasing his exceptional form.
• Verstappen's tow from Hadjar was not enough to beat the Mercedes driver.
• Russell's speed issues persist, leaving him struggling to match his teammate.
• Hadjar's grid penalty allowed him to assist Verstappen without consequence.
• Antonelli's confidence is at an all-time high as he aims to extend his title lead.
