The Berlin Pride attack has shocked Germany, with officials now demanding stricter laws against known extremists after a deadly van ramming and stabbing spree. The incident occurred during Europe’s largest Pride parade, leaving a 65-year-old woman dead and 29 others injured. Chancellor Friedrich Merz pledged to act with “prudence but also determination” to close security gaps, while the far-right AfD party accused the government of failing to tackle Islamist radicalism.
Details of the Attack
On Saturday night, 21-year-old Abdul Ballout, a German national with Lebanese roots, rammed a rented van into a crowd in Berlin’s Tiergarten park, next to the finale of the annual LGBTQ+ celebrations. After the vehicle crashed into a tree, Ballout allegedly attacked people with a large knife. Police shot him dead the following day in Spandau district after he ran at them with a bladed weapon.

Background of the Suspect
Ballout was well known to police as an avowed Islamic extremist. He had previous arrests for bodily harm, extortion, and robbery. Security authorities confirmed he was a supporter of Islamic State and attempted to join the group in Syria last year. He was arrested in Lebanon, repatriated, and in May was convicted in Germany of “preparing a serious act of subversive violence.”
Political Reactions and Demands for New Laws
German officials from multiple parties have called for tighter extremism laws, especially for individuals already monitored by authorities. The AfD, currently leading in national opinion polls, used the attack to mobilize voters ahead of three key state elections. Chancellor Merz emphasized the need for “prudence but also determination” in addressing security gaps. A sombre ceremony at the Brandenburg Gate drew thousands to mourn the victims.
