Johnny Depp's surprise appearance as Ebenezer Scrooge at Comic-Con signals his big Hollywood comeback, but not everyone is ready to welcome him back. The actor, who has faced legal battles and public scrutiny since his highly publicized trial with Amber Heard, is now starring in a new Paramount film titled Scrooge. This marks his most prominent role in years, and the trailer makes no secret of it being a comeback vehicle. However, the controversy surrounding his personal life remains a divisive topic among fans and industry insiders.
The Controversial Return of Johnny Depp
Depp's career hit a standstill after the 2022 defamation trial and the UK civil court ruling that found he had repeatedly assaulted his ex-wife. Despite winning the US trial, many in Hollywood remained hesitant to work with him. His recent projects like Minimata and Jeanne du Barry underperformed or drew protests. Now, with Scrooge, Paramount is betting on his star power, but the backlash is already brewing.

Captions proclaim: “He brought us Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands and the Mad Hatter. This November, the master of misfits returns.” Depp then whispers, “It’s good to be back.” The marketing is undeniably direct, but critics argue it glosses over his past.
