Kristin Hersh, the iconic frontwoman of Throwing Muses and a pioneering solo artist, is ready to answer your questions about her new album Sugar on Blackstone and her legendary career. As one of the defining voices of US alt-rock, Hersh will join us for an exclusive Q&A session, and we want your queries submitted by 2pm BST on 21 July.
Kristin Hersh’s Musical Journey: From Throwing Muses to Solo Stardom
Formed in the early 1980s in Rhode Island with stepsister Tanya Donelly, Throwing Muses became a cornerstone of the 4AD label’s roster. Their 1989 album Hunkpapa charted in the UK, placing them alongside peers like Pixies and Cocteau Twins in the vibrant college rock and dreampop scene. Hersh’s voice—sweet one moment, serrated the next—defined their commercial yet edgy sound.

By 1995, University broke the UK Top 10, while Hersh’s debut solo album Hips and Makers (featuring Michael Stipe) did the same the previous year. After Throwing Muses went on hiatus in 1998, Hersh explored a sparser solo sound, formed 50 Foot Wave, and pioneered direct-to-fan funding with Cash Music. She reformed Throwing Muses in 2003, releasing four more albums.
New Album Sugar on Blackstone: Themes and Tour
Set for release on 18 September, Sugar on Blackstone explores “life and death, enrichment and poverty, and the small but defining moments of childhood.” Hersh will tour the UK and Ireland starting 26 September, followed by Europe and Australia dates. This is your chance to ask about the album’s inspirations or any part of her storied career.
