Mastodon is reflecting on the tragic loss of bandmate Brent Hinds, whose shocking final words and death in a motorcycle accident have left the metal world in mourning. In an exclusive interview, bassist Troy Sanders and drummer Brann Dailor discuss the grief, the tour, and the legacy of a unique musician.
The Aftermath of Losing a Bandmate
It has been an emotional rollercoaster for Mastodon. In February 2025, Dailor's mother passed away, and the very next month the band parted ways with co-founding guitarist Brent Hinds. Hinds subsequently posted angry messages on social media, calling his former bandmates a “shit band with horrible humans”. Then, just weeks later, he died in a motorcycle accident at age 51.

Sanders says the tour has been “31 days of musical bliss,” but admits the pain is still raw. “We’re coping by focusing on the music and the fans,” he adds.
What Made Brent Hinds So Vital to Mastodon
Hinds brought a distinctive country twang to Mastodon’s sound, thanks to his Alabama upbringing and early banjo playing. Combined with Dailor’s prog-inspired drumming and Bill Kelliher’s heavy riffs, Hinds gave the band a sonic identity that set them apart from peers like Trivium and Killswitch Engage.
“What we had sounded original and different,” Dailor says. “We always saw ourselves rooted in metal, but we could shape shift if we wanted.”
A Legacy of Innovation
Mastodon have won a Grammy, scored three Top 10 albums, and even opened for Black Sabbath at their farewell gig. Hinds was a key part of that journey, and his loss leaves a void that cannot be filled.
Tour Life Amid Grief
The band is currently on a European tour playing 22 shows across 14 countries during a record-breaking heatwave. Despite the tragedy, Sanders says the energy is “super energetic.” They are even considering staying in Europe after the tour ends.
