Prisoners of Paradise Review: Ellie Bamber's Mauritius Romance 2026

Prisoners of Paradise review: Ellie Bamber leads a chaste colonial romance set in 1925 Mauritius, but the film's good intentions can't overcome its insipid lovers and underdeveloped story. Based on a novel by Booker nominee Romesh Gunesekera, this drama attempts to tackle racial divides but ends up as tepid as camomile tea.

Plot and Setting: Colonial Mauritius Love Story

The film follows 17-year-old Lucy (Ellie Bamber), an upper-class Englishwoman sent to live on her uncle's sugar plantation after her mother's death. There she meets Krishna (Mehdi Dehbi), a local man of Indian heritage working in the fields. Their secret romance unfolds against the backdrop of a plantation still haunted by its history of slavery and indentured labor.

Uncle George (Rupert Penry-Jones) embodies the colonial mindset, clinging to racist beliefs and keeping torture instruments in his garden. Lucy is horrified by his views, setting the stage for a star-crossed love story that aims to challenge the status quo.

Performance Analysis: Strong Cast, Weak Script

Ellie Bamber delivers a earnest performance as Lucy, but the character remains too saintly and thinly sketched. Mehdi Dehbi brings quiet dignity to Krishna, yet we see frustratingly little of his life or the realities of plantation workers. Rupert Penry-Jones stands out as Uncle George, showing glints of weakness and self-loathing beneath his upper-crust bluster.

The film's central romance lacks chemistry, with even the waterfall meeting scene filmed in a damp, unerotic way. The lovers are noble but insipid, making it hard to invest in their plight.

Comparison: Book vs. Film

Thematic Issues: Race and Colonialism

The film tackles important themes of racial superiority and colonial exploitation. However, it fails to fully explore Krishna's perspective, reducing him to a love interest rather than a fully realized character. The plantation's dark history is hinted at but never deeply examined.

Uncle George's plot to save the failing plantation by marrying Lucy to wealthy Frenchman Antoine (Edward Akrout) adds tension, but the resolution feels predictable and unsatisfying.

Key Takeaways

• Strong performances from Rupert Penry-Jones and Ellie Bamber, but the script lets them down.
• Underdeveloped romance lacks passion and emotional depth.
• Colonial themes are present but not given enough weight.
• Beautiful setting of Mauritius is underutilized.
• Fans of period dramas may appreciate the aesthetic but not the substance.

Final Verdict: A Noble Failure

Prisoners of Paradise has good intentions but fails to deliver a compelling love story or a sharp critique of colonialism. The film is now available on digital platforms, but viewers seeking a passionate or thought-provoking drama may be disappointed.
