The Southport killer Axel Rudakubana has been transferred from Belmarsh prison to Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, sparking outrage and concern from the families of his young victims. The move, confirmed by the Ministry of Justice, does not alter his 52-year life sentence for the murders of Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, as well as attempted murder of eight other children and two adults.
Why Was the Southport Killer Moved to Broadmoor?
Officials concluded that Rudakubana could not be managed safely in a category A prison. The Guardian revealed the transfer on Thursday, just a week before the two-year anniversary of the horrific attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on 29 July 2024. The announcement has left the bereaved families feeling betrayed and re-traumatised.

Families Demand Transparency
Chris Walker, the lawyer representing the three families, told BBC Breakfast: "It's a deep concern of mine that this is a pattern starting to develop by him trying to retraumatise the families from his cell." Walker emphasised that there was no evidence of psychosis at the time of the murders, raising questions about Rudakubana's motives for the transfer.
The families were informed via a letter on 22 July but received no explanation. Walker added: "With the vacuum of information, the concern is that he's manipulating the situation to his own benefit."
