Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed he will not deploy a man-marker on Lionel Messi in the World Cup final, despite the Argentina captain's stunning form of eight goals and four assists. The revelation comes ahead of Sunday's high-stakes clash in New Jersey, where two footballing superpowers will battle for glory.
De la Fuente's Memorable First Encounter with Messi
De la Fuente recalled a humorous anecdote from 22 years ago, when he first faced a 16-year-old Messi during an under-19 cup tie. As Sevilla's youth coach, he assigned a man-marker to neutralize the prodigy. The match remained 0-0 until the 70th minute, when the marker received a yellow card and was substituted. In the final 15 minutes, Messi scored four goals.

When asked if teenage sensation Lamine Yamal could be Spain's answer to Messi, De la Fuente dismissed the comparison. “Lamine has to be Lamine. Messi can never be repeated. He is an extraordinary talent and above all an example for young players in his attitude, his behaviour, the spectacular World Cup he is producing and the age at which he is producing it.”
Key Tactical Decisions for the Final
De la Fuente emphasized a team-oriented approach rather than singling out Messi. He expects a “great show between two super teams” filled with talent and brilliance. He also defended Argentina against accusations of employing dark arts, stating, “I have extraordinary admiration for a team that is...”
