The F Ward review finds this new medical drama struggling to compete with television giants like The Pitt. Despite strong performances from Anna Friel and a talented cast, the six-part series on Stan feels flat and unconvincing.
What Makes The F Ward Different?
The series follows a group of intern doctors who have made serious mistakes in their careers. Each is given one last chance to prove themselves at Sydney's underfunded Pines Hospital. The premise is intriguing, but execution falls short.

Key Characters and Performances
Anna Friel plays Dr. Gloria Wall, the mentor figure. Her performance is solid, but the script doesn't give her enough depth. Other cast members include Ioane Sa'ula as Jimmy, a doctor hiding a heart condition, and Lola Bond as Ellie, who caused a patient's death with incorrect medication.
| Aspect | The F Ward | The Pitt (Comparison) |
|---|---|---|
| Pacing | Slow, uneven | Fast, gripping |
| Character Depth | Shallow | Rich, nuanced |
| Hospital Realism | Artificial | Authentic |
| Overall Impact | Forgettable | Memorable |
Why The F Ward Doesn't Quite Work
The show suffers from an over-lit aesthetic and a lack of genuine tension. While hospitals are naturally dramatic settings, this series feels like a sanitized version of reality. The performances improve as the series progresses, but no single character truly engages the viewer.
Key Takeaways
- Premise is interesting but poorly executed
- Anna Friel's talent is underutilized
- Comparison to The Pitt is unavoidable and unfavorable
- Hospital setting lacks authenticity
- Only recommended for die-hard medical drama fans
