Addiction recovery is a deeply personal journey, and musician Nate Amos—known as This Is Lorelei—shares his powerful story of overcoming substance abuse to find peace and creative fulfillment. For most of his life, Amos made music just to get through the day, producing dozens of self-released albums and EPs on Bandcamp since 2012. Now 35, he is a quintessential bedroom-pop artist whose work ethic and vulnerability resonate with fans worldwide.
The Road to Sobriety
Amos got sober a few years ago, a turning point marked by a hand tattoo reading “OK N8,” inked by a friend shortly after he quit drinking. “Exactly when you’re not supposed to be making decisions like getting a tattoo on your hand,” he jokes. His journey wasn’t easy, but it taught him resilience. “I know what it’s like to be vulnerable,” he says, reflecting on how addiction shaped his music.

How Music Healed Him
Recording his latest album, The Singer in My Band, at his Brooklyn apartment studio helped Amos channel his struggles into art. The album, completed before signing to Matador Records, is “alarmingly jaunty” compared to his earlier work. “I sent them the completed album within half an hour of signing the contract,” he recalls. “I was like: ‘Actually, it’s done!’” This creative burst mirrors his newfound stability.
