The Ugandan kingdom succession dispute has captivated the nation and beyond, as a bitter feud erupts over who should inherit the throne of Tooro. The death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the world's youngest reigning monarch when he was crowned in 1995 at age three, has sparked a dramatic confrontation between tradition and a surprising twist: a secret son named in his will.
The Sudden Passing of a Beloved King
King Oyo died on 27 August in the United States, where he was receiving treatment for cancer. His death marked the end of an era for the Tooro kingdom, a traditional monarchy in western Uganda. Oyo was unmarried and was not publicly known to have any children, which set the stage for a contentious succession process.

Two Claimants, One Throne
On Wednesday, the royal clan's succession committee announced it had chosen Oyo's cousin, Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor and editor at the public broadcaster UBC, as crown prince. However, later that same day, Oyo's sister, Princess Ruth Nsemere Komuntale, held a press conference asserting that according to her brother's will, a previously unknown son should succeed him. The kingdom's spokesperson shared a section of the document stating: "I hereby declare and direct that if, at the date of my death, I am survived by a son lawfully recognised as my biological son, I appoint him as my heir to the throne of the kingdom of Tooro."
The Queen Mother's Outrage
In a statement on Thursday, Oyo's mother, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki, denounced a "self-appointed group of clan members" who had selected a new king despite having had the will read to them hours earlier. She insisted that the will must be respected and that her grandson, the secret son, is the rightful heir.

What Happens Next?
The kingdom's spokesperson has urged calm, but the divide is deep. The royal clan argues that tradition must guide the succession, while the late king's immediate family insists his final wishes are paramount. The Ugandan government has yet to intervene, but pressure is mounting for a resolution that respects both cultural heritage and legal obligations.
