The Zambia space program and its Afronauts represent a remarkable Pan-African story of ambition and defiance. In the 1960s, as Zambia gained independence, Edward Mukuka Nkoloso launched a mission to beat superpowers to the moon. This article explores the true tale behind the headlines.

The Birth of Zambia's Space Ambitions

In February 1960, British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan delivered his "wind of change" speech, signaling the end of colonial rule in Africa. By 1964, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland dissolved, and Zambia was born. Amid this hopeful energy, Nkoloso founded the Zambia National Academy of Science, Space Research and Philosophy.

He announced that Zambia would join the space race, vowing to beat the US and Soviet Union. Despite the nation's lack of infrastructure, Nkoloso's vision captured the imagination of his people.

The Afronauts and Their Training

Nkoloso selected 12 young men and women as Afronauts. Their training took place on a remote farm near Lusaka. Methods included swinging trainees on ropes, dunking them in rivers, and rolling them down hills to simulate weightlessness.

Despite Western ridicule, Nkoloso wrote an op-ed titled "We're Going to Mars! With a Spacegirl, Two Cats and a Missionary" and requested a £7 million grant from UNESCO.

Why This Pan-African Story Matters

The Zambian space program was dismissed as a joke by Western media, but it symbolized African self-determination. It challenged the notion that Africans were not ready for self-rule. Today, artists are retelling this story to highlight its significance.
