Hoarding is a serious mental health condition that affects millions, yet many suffer in silence due to fear of eviction and stigma. Support groups like Prima Group's Bringing Hoarders Together offer a lifeline, providing a safe space for individuals to share experiences and find practical solutions.
Why Hoarding Support Groups Are Essential
People with hoarding disorder often face isolation and shame. Peer support groups break down barriers by connecting individuals who understand the struggle. Members discuss everything from landlord negotiations to daily living challenges, like showering at leisure centres because bathrooms are unusable.

The Role of Housing Associations
Organizations such as Prima Group run fortnightly sessions where attendees openly talk about their fears. Sarah, a group member, ended up homeless after eviction due to hoarding. Now, she is terrified to ask for help again. These groups provide non-judgmental guidance and advocacy.
Alarming Statistics on Hoarding and Fire Risk
A Guardian investigation revealed a 78% increase in fires involving hoarding since 2020 across UK fire services. In London alone, over 2,000 properties were flagged as high-risk in 2023, up from 1,200 four years earlier. This data underscores the urgent need for intervention.
| Year | London Properties Flagged for Hoarding | UK Fire Incidents Involving Hoarding (Increase) |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 1,200 | Baseline |
| 2023 | 2,000+ | +78% |

Overcoming the Stigma
Laura Miller, 65, says, “You’re better off being a drug addict. You’re better off being an alcoholic.” This harsh reality reflects the deep stigma. Support groups challenge these perceptions by fostering empathy and education. Community-driven initiatives are crucial for long-term recovery.
How to Find a Hoarding Support Group
Start by contacting local housing associations, mental health charities, or fire services. Many offer free resources. Online forums also provide anonymity for those not ready to attend in person. Remember, you are not alone—help exists.
