France Evacuates Cap Ferret as Wildfires Rage in Spain 2026

France evacuates the Cap Ferret peninsula as massive wildfires force over 80,000 people to flee across Spain and France, with Madrid declaring a national emergency.

Mass Evacuations Across Southern Europe

In a dramatic escalation of the wildfire crisis, French authorities ordered the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a renowned holiday destination, by land and sea. Simultaneously, Spanish authorities warned that two major blazes near Madrid and Ávila could merge into a single inferno.

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as “dramatic,” triggering a rare state of national emergency. Both countries activated the EU's Civil Protection Mechanism to secure international assistance.
