The AFL was once rife with Steves, Stephens, and Stevens, but now only one remains: Greater Western Sydney’s Stephen Coniglio. This dramatic shift highlights broader name trends in Australian rules football, reflecting cyclical patterns seen in baby names nationwide.
The Golden Era of Steves in the AFL
In the early 1990s, more than 25 Steves dominated the field. Hall of famer Stephen Silvagni played during this peak, from the 1980s through early 2000s. Today, that number has dwindled to just one active player, signaling a generational shift.

Why Are Steves Disappearing?
Just like baby names, AFL player names follow cycles. The most common name in the AFL in 2026 is Jack, followed by Tom, Sam, and Lachlan. With almost 30 Jacks in the league, the name has surged while Steves have faded. This mirrors national trends where Jack has been a top baby name for years.
| Name | Peak Era | Current Count (2026) |
|---|---|---|

| Jack | 2010s-2020s | ~30 |
| Tom | 2010s-2020s | ~20 |

Other Names on the Decline
Mark, Peter, David, and Darren were popular in the 1980s and 90s but are now sparse. Will Scott Pendlebury be the swansong for Scotts? Data from AFL Tables shows these names are fading as new favorites emerge.
