Lara Croft returns in Legacy of Atlantis, a bold reimagining of her 1996 debut adventure. Co-developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, this new title aims to recapture the magic of the original Tomb Raider while modernizing its mechanics for today's gamers.
A Cinematic Reintroduction to Lara Croft
Our journey begins in St Francis' Folly, a location inspired by the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Meteora in Greece. As light filters through cracked ceilings and bats glide across vast ruins, Lara leaps into a crumbling pillared courtyard. These screeching creatures aren't just set dressing—they lurch towards her with unpredictable movements, forcing players to dispatch the swarm with gunfire and panicked punches. It's a suitably cinematic reintroduction to our heroine and her very first adventure.

New Features in Legacy of Atlantis
While the reunion gets off to an auspicious start, there are concerns. It feels like reconnecting with an old friend at the pub, only for them to begin spouting conspiracy theories two pints in. Where the '96 original forced players to rely on their wits—or a pricey strategy guide—to figure out what to do, Lara can now straight-up cheat. She's equipped with an environmental scanner, so a button tap reveals extra environmental lore or simply the solution to a puzzle. It's a change that feels somewhat sacrilegious and may detract from the eerily isolated experience that defined the original.
Comparison: Original vs. Reimagined

| Graphics | Polygon-based, limited detail | Realistic, detailed environments |
| Combat | Basic shooting mechanics | Dynamic swarm encounters with melee options |
